Objective of the Game
In The Settlers of Catan – Struggle for Rome, each player takes on the role of a tribal leader aiming to gain the most victory points by building settlements and conquering Roman provinces. The game ends when a player reaches 10 victory points.
Components
- A variable game board made of hexagonal tiles
- Resource cards: wood, clay, grain, ore, and wool
- Settlements and roads
- Dice
- Building cards
Setup
- Assemble the game board from the hexagonal tiles.
- Each player selects their color and receives settlements and roads in that color.
- Each player places two settlements and two roads on the game board at the start.
Gameplay
The game proceeds in rounds, with each player going through the following steps on their turn:
1. Resource Production
- The active player rolls the dice. The roll determines which hexes produce resources.
- Each player receives resources from the hexes adjacent to their settlements.
2. Trading Phase
- Players can trade resources with each other.
- Market exchange: 4 of the same resource can be traded in for any one other resource.
3. Building Phase
- Players can build roads, settlements, cities, or acquire development cards, using resource cards:
- Road: 1 wood, 1 clay
- Settlement: 1 wood, 1 clay, 1 grain, 1 wool
- City: 2 grain, 3 ore
4. Conquest
- Players have the chance to conquer adjacent Roman provinces for additional victory points.
Special Rules and Strategies
- Strategic Placement: The initial placement of settlements can be crucial for resource production.
- Robber: Upon a dice roll of 7, players can relocate the robber to block resource production for others.
- Building Cities: Upgrading settlements to cities doubles the production rate of resources on their hexes.
Winning the Game
The game ends when a player reaches 10 victory points, declaring them the winner.
