Objective

Tabula, also known as "Aleae Tabulae", is an ancient Roman board game considered to be a precursor to modern Backgammon. The aim of the game is to move all of one's pieces off the board before the opponent does.

Equipment and Setup

The game is played on a rectangular board with three rows of six points each. Each player has 15 pieces of one color. Three dice are used in the game.

Starting the Game

  • Each player rolls one die at the start of the game. The player with the higher roll begins; in case of a tie, players roll again.
  • Both players place their pieces at the starting point on the board.

Gameplay

  • Players move their pieces according to the number rolled on all three dice.
  • The numbers on the dice can be combined in any way to move pieces. Unlike in modern Backgammon, there is no restriction on using specific dice numbers for different pieces; they can be freely combined.
  • Some spaces are "occupied". A player can capture an opponent's piece if the target space contains only one opponent's piece, sending it back to the start.
  • A player cannot move if all spaces are blocked by opponent's pieces. In this case, the player misses a turn.

Bearing Off and Entering Pieces

  • A player must first enter all 15 pieces onto the board before bearing off.
  • A player bears off pieces by rolling exactly the number needed to move a piece off the row.

Winning

The first player to bear all of their pieces off the board is the winner.

Strategies and Tips

  • Building Blockades: Occupying consecutive spaces with your pieces can limit your opponent's movements.
  • Play Aggressively: Plan moves that send your opponent's pieces back to the start, which costs them time.
  • Move Flexibly: Always think several moves ahead, being prepared for different dice roll combinations.
