Modern Art - Objective

In Modern Art, you take on the role of a gallery owner aiming to auction and sell paintings for a profit. The player with the most money at the end wins.

Game Components

• Painting cards in various colors (representing different artists)
• An accountant board to track the paintings' values after each round
• Banknotes as in-game currency
• Auction markers to indicate the type of auction

Setup

1. Each player receives a certain number of painting cards, depending on the number of players.
2. Place remaining cards in a draw deck.
3. Each player receives a specific amount of money.
4. Place the accountant board in the center for all to reference.

Gameplay

The game is played over four rounds. In each round, you auction paintings from your hand. The value of the paintings is determined by how frequently an artist is auctioned.

Types of Auctions

A round ends when a fifth painting of an artist is auctioned. 1. Open Auction: Any player can freely bid, and the highest bidder wins. 2. Sealed Auction: All players secretly submit a bid which is revealed simultaneously. 3. One Offer Auction: The player to the right of the auctioneer makes an offer. The auctioneer accepts or declines; if declined, the offer proceeds clockwise. 4. Fixed Price Auction: The auctioneer sets a price. Players decide in turn whether to buy or pass. If no one buys, the auctioneer keeps the painting and pays the price to the bank. 5. Double Auction: Two paintings from the same artist are up for auction together using general auction rules.

End of the Round and Scoring

• Determine the three most successful artists based on the number of auctions. Assign values of 30, 20, and 10 respectively. Other artists have no value.
• Payout: Players sell paintings of the top three artists to the bank at the determined value.

Strategic Tips

• Auction Timing: Decide wisely when to auction which cards. Early auctions can influence the market value.
• Money Management: Conserve your money; aggressive early bidding can lead to shortages later.
• Artistic Insight: Pay attention to which artists others are promoting and focus on collecting those paintings.

End of Game and Winning

After four rounds, the player with the most money wins.
