Objective

Descent: Journeys in the Dark is an adventure game where players take on the roles of either heroes or the Overlord. The heroes aim to achieve their specific mission objectives, while the Overlord tries to thwart them. The game offers multiple scenarios, each telling a connected story.

Game Components

• Game Board: Modular, consisting of several parts that can be variably assembled.
• Hero and Overlord Figures: Represent the playable characters and their enemies.
• Cards: Various decks for hero abilities, overlord abilities, equipment, and events.
• Dice: Used for battles and skill checks.

Setup

1. Choose a Scenario: Players select a scenario from the scenario book.
2. Assemble Game Board: Set up the modular game board as indicated by the scenario book.
3. Select Characters and Abilities: Each hero selects a character and receives their starting equipment and abilities. The Overlord chooses their decks.
4. Place Tokens: Door, treasure chest, and other special tokens are placed according to the scenario.

Gameplay

The game proceeds in rounds, divided into the Hero Phase and the Overlord Phase.

Hero Phase

1. Movement: Each hero moves across the game board according to their movement ability.
2. Actions: These include attacking, searching, interacting with board objects, or using skills.

Overlord Phase

1. Draw Overlord Cards: The Overlord draws cards at the beginning of their phase, providing additional options.
2. Activate Monsters: The Overlord activates monsters to perform attacks.
3. Play Events: The Overlord can use event cards to create specific obstacles for the heroes.

Combat Mechanics

• Attack: The attacker rolls their attack dice. The type and number of dice determine the attack type.
• Defense: The defender rolls defense dice to mitigate damage.
• Calculate Damage: The total attack value minus the defense determines the damage dealt to the defender.

Winning the Game

The game ends when heroes achieve their mission objectives or when the Overlord places enough threats to defeat the heroes.

Strategic Tips

• Heroes: Coordination is crucial. Assign tasks wisely and support each other.
• Overlord: Skillfully use your monsters' abilities and plan ahead to surprise the heroes.

Special Considerations

• Use of Skills: Hero cards can turn the tide during critical moments.
