Objective of the Game

The objective of Monopoly is to bankrupt your opponents and maximize your wealth by strategically buying properties, building on them, and collecting rent until you remain the sole player.

Game Components

  • Game Board: Featuring streets and special spaces.
  • Cards: Includes property deed cards, Chance, and Community Chest cards.
  • Money: Various denominations for transactions.
  • Tokens: Each player chooses a token to move around the board.
  • Houses and Hotels: For building on properties.
  • Dice: Two six-sided dice.

Game Setup

  1. Each player receives a starting amount of cash (usually $1500).
  2. Property deed cards are sorted by color and placed near the board.
  3. Community Chest and Chance cards are shuffled and placed face down.
  4. Each player chooses a token.
  5. The starting player is determined randomly.

Gameplay

  1. Players take turns rolling the dice and moving their token clockwise around the board according to the dice roll.
  2. If a player lands on an unowned property, they may purchase it for the listed price. Payment is made to the bank, and the player receives the deed card.
  3. If a player lands on a property owned by another player, they must pay rent to the owner. Rent is listed on the deed card and increases with developments.
  4. Landing on Chance or Community Chest requires drawing a card from the respective deck and following its instructions.
  5. Other spaces like "Free Parking" (no action), "Go to Jail" (direct to jail), and "Taxes" (payment to the bank) affect gameplay.
  6. Players in Jail have three options:
  7. Pay $50 to the bank.
  8. Use a "Get Out of Jail Free" card.
  9. Wait for three turns or roll a double to escape early.
  10. Players with a monopoly (all properties of a color) can build houses or hotels to increase rent.
  11. Players can negotiate, trade, and deal with each other.
  12. A player is out of the game once they cannot pay their debts.

Rules and Nuances

  • Mortgages: Players can mortgage properties for emergency cash from the bank.
  • Deals: Players may make agreements and trade properties.
  • Bankruptcy: A player unable to pay is declared bankrupt and exits the game.

Strategic Tips

  • Invest Early: Acquiring properties, especially color groups, is key to early advantage.
