Objective of the Game
Caylus is a strategic board game in which players take on the role of builders in medieval France, tasked with aiding in the construction of a castle for the king while also building the most impressive city to earn victory points. The main objective is to have the most victory points at the end of the game.
Components
- Game Board: Displays the road to Caylus and different building sites.
- Castle: Consists of three parts: Towers, Walls, and Dungeon.
- Building Tiles: Various types such as residential buildings, craft buildings, and prestige buildings.
- Resources: Stone, wood, fabric, and food.
- Money: To pay workers and for performing actions.
- Round and Track Tokens: To indicate player order and victory points.
- Worker Figures and Markers: To perform actions on the board and track progress.
Gameplay
The game is played over several rounds, each consisting of multiple phases: 1. Income Phase: Each player receives 2 deniers as income. Certain buildings or actions may generate additional income. 2. Placement Phase: In turn order, players place their workers on various action spaces on the board; these spaces have varying costs based on their position and importance. 3. Building Phase: Players execute actions in the order of the road, gathering resources, constructing new buildings, and contributing to the castle's construction. 4. Castle Building: Players can donate resources to contribute to the castle for victory points. 5. Bridge Phase: The bailiff may be moved along the board, affecting accessible actions for the next round.
Strategic Dispositions
- Worker Placement: Decide wisely which actions are most urgently needed, as your money and the number of workers are limited.
- Resource Management: Plan ahead to ensure you have enough resources for future moves or castle construction.
- Building Control: Building prestige buildings can not only earn victory points but also allow special abilities or advantages.
- Bailiff Positioning: Keep an eye on the bailiff's position, as it can markedly change the dynamics of available moves.
The game ends when the castle is complete or there are no actions left in the game. The player with the most victory points wins.
