Objective
In Kuhhandel, the aim is to collect sets of animal cards (quartets) to accumulate the highest total value by the end of the game.
Components
- Cards: 40 animal cards with 10 different animals, each having 4 cards of varying point values.
- Money Cards: Each player starts with an equal amount of paper money.
Setup
- Shuffle Cards: Shuffle the animal and money cards thoroughly.
- Distribute Money: Each player receives an equal starting amount of money.
- Deal Cards: Distribute the animal cards evenly among players.
Gameplay
The game proceeds in rounds consisting of two main phases: Auctions and Barter (Kuhhandel).
1. Auctions
- Starting with the first player, take turns in a clockwise direction.
- The active player draws the top animal card from the deck and starts an auction.
- All players secretly decide how much they are willing to bid using their money cards.
- The highest bidder wins the card and pays the auctioneer.
- If no acceptable bids are made, the auctioneer keeps the card and pays 100 units from their own money to the bank.
2. Barter (Kuhhandel)
- At any time, a player can challenge another player to a barter deal on an animal of the same type they both hold.
- Both players secretly select an amount of money they are willing to offer for the animal.
- The offers are revealed simultaneously, and the higher bidder decides whether they want the animal or the money offered.
End of Game
The game ends when all animal cards have been auctioned, and no more barter deals are possible. Players calculate their points based on the value of their completed quartets.
