Objective of the Game

The main objective of Chainmail is to experience a medieval role-playing adventure where players guide their characters through various missions and battles.

Player Equipment

  • A rulebook for Chainmail
  • Character sheets for players to create and manage their characters
  • Dice, typically six-sided (D6) and twenty-sided (D20) dice
  • Pens and paper for notes
  • A Game Master (GM) who conducts the adventure and controls the environment and non-player characters (NPCs)

Preparation

  1. Character Creation: Each player creates a character by selecting race and class, distributing attributes, and choosing equipment.
  2. Rule Overview: The Game Master provides a brief introduction to the essential rules and the world of Chainmail.

Gameplay

The game proceeds in "sessions" where the Game Master directs the game and players let their characters act in the game world. Each session typically lasts 2-4 hours and might include combat, problem-solving tasks, and role-playing situations.

  • Exploration & Interaction: Players decide what their characters do while they explore the game world, speak with NPCs, and collect items.
  • Combat: Combat takes place in a turn-based system. Each character has a certain number of actions per round, during which they can move, attack, defend, or cast spells.
  • Initiative: At the start of combat, the order of actions is determined by a dice roll.
  • Attacks and Defense: Players make attacks and defend by rolling dice. The outcome is influenced by the characters’ attributes and equipment.

Rules and Features

  • Hit Points (HP): Each character has a certain number of HP, reduced by damage taken.
  • Magic & Abilities: Characters can use special abilities or magic that affect their challenge. It’s important to note the effects and costs of these abilities.
  • Leveling Up: By gaining experience points (XP), characters can level up, which improves their attributes and skills.

Strategic Considerations

  • Resource Management: Players must carefully manage resources such as spells, ammunition, and healing items.
  • Teamwork: Chainmail benefits greatly from good teamwork, as many challenges can be overcome through collaboration.

Winning & Ending

The game ends when players complete the adventure or campaign planned by the Game Master. This may take several sessions.
