Objective
In A Game of Thrones CATAN: The Brotherhood of the Watch, players take on the roles of brothers of the Night's Watch in Westeros. The goal is to gain the most recognition by building settlements and guard towers, defending against the wildlings, and ultimately becoming the new Lord Commander.
Setup
The game is played on a modular board made of hexagonal terrain tiles that represent different types of landscapes (forest, hill, field, pasture, mountains, etc.) which produce resources. Additionally, the board features the Wall and the northern area filled with wildlings.
- Set up the board as described in the manual.
- Place the number tokens on the terrain hexes following the alphabet markings.
- Each player chooses a color and takes the corresponding settlements (houses), roads, and guards (towers).
- Each player starts with two settlements and roads already placed on the board.
- Resource cards are sorted into separate stacks: Lumber, Brick, Wool, Grain, and Ore.
- Place the wildling figures north of the Wall.
Gameplay
The game is played in rounds, and each round consists of the following phases:
-
Rolling the Dice: At the beginning of their turn, the active player rolls two dice. The sum determines which terrain hexes generate resources that round. Each player receives resources for their settlements or cities adjacent to those terrains.
-
Ranger Phase (unique to this version): In addition to traditional rules, players can use Ranger cards to influence wildling movement.
-
Trading and Building: The active player can trade and build using the resources they've acquired. Trading can be done with other players or by using the bank with a 4-to-1 trade rate. Players can build roads, settlements, guards, and development cards.
- Building a road: Costs 1 Lumber and 1 Brick.
- Building a settlement: Costs 1 Lumber, 1 Brick, 1 Grain, and 1 Wool.
-
Placing a guard (guard tower building): Be strategic about placing guard towers along the "Wall".
-
Defending against Wildlings: Each turn, wildlings will attempt to move south towards the Wall. Players must work together strategically to prevent their advance by deploying guards effectively.
-
Victory Points (Recognition): Players earn recognition points by building settlements and guard towers. The first player to reach 13 points wins the game.
Strategic Tips
-
Trading is key: Make effective use of trading opportunities both with the bank and other players.
-
Protect the Wall: Good management of your guard towers is crucial to having any chance of staving off wildling advances and gaining additional advantages in the game.
-
Long roads: Building the longest roads can earn additional victory points, so don't neglect this aspect of expansion.
-
Cooperation: Strategic cooperation in defending against the wildlings can be beneficial to all players, but always keep an eye on your own goals.
This game combines the classic elements of CATAN with the engaging themes and expansions of A Game of Thrones, requiring strategic planning and cooperative gameplay.
