Objective of the Game

Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers is a standalone board game set in prehistoric times within the Carcassonne universe. The objective is to score the most points by placing tiles and using tribe members, called Meeples, to complete features like forests, rivers, and meadows, and by building camps.

Game Components

  • 79 Landscape tiles
  • 7 Special tiles
  • 25 Meeples per player in different colors
  • 5 Camps per player
  • 1 Scoring board
  • 1 Rule book

Setup

  1. Place the scoring board and have each player place a Meeple (as a scoring marker) on the starting space.
  2. Place the starting tile, showing river and forest, in the center of the table.
  3. Shuffle the other landscape tiles and stack them face-down.

Game Flow

The game proceeds clockwise in turns. Each turn consists of three phases:

1. Draw and Place a Tile

The active player draws a landscape tile and places it adjacent to the existing tiles. Edges of the new tile must match the features of adjacent tiles (e.g., river to river, forest to forest).

2. Deploy a Meeple

After placing the tile, the player can place a Meeple on it. The positions can be: - Forest: On the edge of the forest. - River: On the river area. - Meadow: On the meadow area.

Note: An area can only be occupied if no other Meeple is already present.

Special Option: Build a Camp

Camps can only be placed on meadows and score points for each adjacent forest feature with a camp symbol. Each player may only place one camp.

3. Score Features

Score Forests

When a forest is completely enclosed, it is immediately scored. Points are awarded according to its size and any prehistoric symbols within it.

Score Rivers

A river scores when it reaches an end or both sides are completed with source areas or lakes.

Score Meadows

Meadows are not scored during the game but are scored at the end.

End of the Game & Final Scoring

The game ends once all landscape tiles are placed. In the final scoring, incomplete features, camps, and meadows are evaluated: - Forests and Rivers: Unfinished features score fewer points. - Meadows: Points are awarded for each complete species depicted. - Camps: Score based on each camp symbol adjacent to them.

Strategic Tips

  • Strategically complete forests: Complete forests in ways that maximize points from finalizing symbols.
  • Monitor meadows: Place and maintain meadows to gain diverse species benefits.
  • Long-term Planning: Build camps strategically to benefit from surrounding symbols over time.
