Objective of the Game
In Hamburgum, players take on the role of wealthy merchants in 17th-century Hamburg. The main objective of the game is to gain wealth and fame by building churches and skilfully managing economic capabilities.
Game Setup
- Game Board: The board shows a circle with various action spaces that players can utilize. There are also church projects that need to be built.
- Market Tiles: These are available for trade.
- Resources: There are three main resources: beer, cloth, and sugar, which are managed on the board.
- Money and Buildings: Each player receives a given amount of money at the start. Players construct different buildings throughout the game.
- Ship Cards: Available for trading purposes.
Gameplay
- Action Circle: The core mechanism in Hamburgum is the action circle, a rondel. Each turn, a player moves their piece up to three spaces clockwise and takes one of the following actions:
- Producing: Activate a chosen production space to generate beer, sugar, or cloth.
- Selling: Sell the produced goods at the market to earn money.
- Building: Use acquired funds to construct buildings or churches.
- Trading: By selling resources, players can also acquire ship cards that offer various bonuses.
Special Features
- Church Building: A critical method of scoring is building churches. To construct a church, wealth and resources are needed.
- Strategic Planning: Since each move is significantly guided by the position on the rondel, forward planning is crucial.
- Buildings: Different buildings offer diverse benefits, like more production possibilities or better prices for goods.
End of the Game
The game ends once a predetermined number of churches have been built. The player with the most "victory points," earned through church building and successful buildings, wins the game.
