Objective
The objective of Kingsburg is to gather the most victory points (VP) over multiple years in the game. You achieve this by constructing buildings, defending the realm against invasions, and other strategic actions.
Components
- A game board displaying the King's Court and player provinces
- Dice in various colors
- Wooden markers for resources (wood, stone, gold)
- Building cards
- Event cards
- Influence markers
- Special figures: Advisors
Gameplay
Kingsburg is played over five "years," each consisting of eight rounds. Each year is broken down into the following phases:
-
Spring Phase - Draw an Event Card: At the beginning of each year, reveal an event card that sets specific conditions or additional rules for that year.
-
Advisor Influence Phase
- All players roll three dice of their color simultaneously.
- In player order, players allocate their dice to different advisors on the board (matching the sum of the dice to the advisor).
-
Each advisor provides specific resources or advantages which can be used strategically to construct buildings or withstand challenges later in the military phase.
-
Production Phase - Gain resources based on advisor choices paid for on the board.
-
Building Phase
- Players can construct buildings from their province list, paying the required resources.
-
Each building offers various advantages. Some buildings offer direct VPs, while others provide permanent or temporary benefits.
-
Military Phase - Combat invasions.
- At the end of each year, players face an attack based on a predetermined sequence.
- Players compare their defense strength (from buildings or advisor bonuses) against the invader's strength.
- Successful defense results in rewards, while failing leads to a loss of resources or VPs.
Strategic Considerations
- Resource Management: The choice of advisors and the buildings you construct should balance acquiring resources and building defenses.
- Planning: Since dice play a role, always maintain multiple options.
- Interaction: Strategically block other players by using advisors before they do.
Victory Conditions
After five years, the game concludes, and all players total their victory points from various achievements and constructed buildings. The player with the most VPs at the end wins the game.
