Objective
Nyctophobia is a cooperative board game where players work together to escape a pursuer while navigating through a dark forest. The unique aspect of this game is that the players, acting as "Survivors," cannot see and therefore wear blindfolds or keep their eyes closed. One player takes on the role of the pursuer and attempts to chase and capture the other players.
Game Components
- A game board representing the forest.
- Figures for the Survivors.
- A figure for the Pursuer.
- Cards indicating obstacles, landmarks, and events.
- Blindfolds for players portraying the Survivors.
Setup
- Board Setup: The game master (the pursuer) sets up the board with trees, rocks, and other obstacles. This setup is unknown to the Survivors.
- Player Roles: One player is designated as the Pursuer, facing all Survivors.
- Blindfolds: All Survivors wear their blindfolds or keep their eyes closed.
- Starting Positions: Survivors are positioned on their starting areas while the Pursuer takes their starting position.
Gameplay
- Round Sequence:
- Survivor Turn: Each Survivor takes turns. The Pursuer guides them by physically moving their hands across the board to feel what is around them. They must describe their actions based on what they sense (e.g., if they come across a tree, a rock, or nothing).
- Survivor Actions: Possible actions include moving to an accessible direction, exploring the surroundings, or searching for an exit.
-
Pursuer Turn: After the Survivors, the Pursuer makes a move. The Pursuer can try to approach the Survivors to capture them.
-
Game Objective: The Survivors aim to collectively escape the forest before all are caught by the Pursuer. The Pursuer wins if they manage to capture all Survivors before they can escape.
Special Features & Tips
- Communication: Since Survivors are blind, clear communication is crucial. Players should actively share discoveries and strategies.
- Pursuer's Strategy: The Pursuer should consider that the Survivors are severely hindered by the treacherous terrain while they themselves have an overview of the board. Skillful maneuvering can apply pressure and corner the Survivors.
- Maintaining Tension: The game's atmosphere is intense due to the blind factor. The Pursuer should use this to keep the tension up and occasionally mislead the players or confuse them, yet always play fair.
Nyctophobia provides a unique gaming experience enhanced by the sensory deprivation element and the necessity for teamwork, creating a special kind of suspense. Enjoy the game and watch out in the dark!
