Objective of the Game
In Dampfross (Railway Rivals), the objective is for players to build an efficient railway network and through clever route planning and racing against other players, accumulate the most points. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.
Number of Players and Age
This game can be played with 2 to 6 players and is suitable for players aged 10 and above.
Game Components
- A game board that features a map with various cities and types of terrain
- Pencils and paper to draw out your rail network
- Dice (typically two D6)
- Race cards to set the race routes
- Possibly play money for managing resources
Game Setup
- Each player selects a color and receives a pencil and a piece of paper.
- Players start with a set amount of starting capital.
- The game board is placed in the center of the table with all towns and possible routes visible.
Gameplay
The game proceeds in phases: the construction phase and the race phase.
Construction Phase
- In each construction phase, players build one or two tracks between different cities. The cost of construction depends on the type of terrain between these cities.
- Costs:
- Flat land: Low cost
- Hills: Moderate cost
- Mountains: High cost
- Rivers and lakes: Very high cost or possible detour needed
- Each track is marked on the map with lines in the player's color.
Race Phase
- At the beginning of this phase, several destinations (cities) are drawn from the race cards, setting the objective for each race.
- Players decide if they wish to participate in a race, paying to "rent" opponents' track if they use opposing routes.
- Races are run using dice rolls where players alternate turns to advance.
- The winner of a race earns points and possibly prize money.
End Phase
The game concludes after a preset number of rounds or race phases. The players' points are totaled.
Tips and Strategies
- Planning is crucial. Develop your route layout early to avoid expensive terrain.
- Use your opponents' routes to quickly finish races but remember to pay the rent!
- Position yourself strategically in races to ensure the highest point earnings.
