Game Objective

Ohanami is a strategic card game where players aim to score the most points by collecting and organizing cards in their gardens over three rounds. The player with the highest score at the end of the game wins.

Components

  • 120 cards in four colors (each with numbers ranging from 1 to 120)
  • Rulebook
  • Scoring pad

Setup

  1. Shuffle the Deck: Thoroughly shuffle the card deck. Each card represents a stone that can be planted in a garden.

  2. Deal Cards: Each player is dealt 10 cards, and the remaining cards form a draw pile.

Gameplay

Ohanami is played over three rounds. Each round follows the same steps:

  1. Select and Pass Cards
  2. Each player selects two cards from their hand, to plant in their garden, and places them face down in front of them.
  3. The remaining cards are passed to the player on their left.
  4. All players simultaneously reveal their two chosen cards.

  5. Plant/Place Cards

  6. Players must add their chosen cards to one of up to three rows in their garden.
  7. Row Rule: The sequence in each row must either remain ascending or end with the lowest card that has been placed in that row. No cards can be inserted in between.

  8. Repeat

  9. This process is repeated until all cards for that round have been played.

Scoring

  • After each round, scoring takes place:
  • Gardens with Stones (gray cards): Number of gray cards.
  • Second and Third Rounds: Additional colors are scored:
    • Water (blue cards): Number x 3 points.
    • Green (green cards) in the third round: Number x 4 points.
    • Cherry Blossoms (pink cards): Each pink card scores 7 points (only in the third round).

Special Rules and Tips

  • Row Strategy: Carefully consider how to build your rows, as each card can only be placed once and no card can be inserted to break the sequence rule.

  • Stay Flexible: As cards are passed from round to round, plan ahead and keep your garden flexible to accept new cards.

  • Watch Opponents: Pay attention to which cards your left neighbor receives and the strategy they might be pursuing.

  • Target Colors: Cherry blossoms in the third round are particularly valuable. Consider preparing your strategy to be well-positioned for these grabs.

End of the Game

After the third round, a final scoring occurs. The player with the highest total score wins.
