Objective of the Game

In Simply Catan, your aim is to be the first player to reach 10 victory points. You can achieve these points by building settlements, cities, development cards, or having the "longest road."

Setup

  • Board Setup: The game board consists of hexagonal landscape tiles that are arranged randomly.
  • Number Tokens: Place the number tokens on the individual tiles.
  • Resources: Each player receives a number of resource cards based on their starting positions.
  • Roads and Settlements: Place two roads and two settlements on the board. The order is determined by a dice roll.

Game Play

Each player takes turns and can perform the following actions:

  1. Resource Production: The active player rolls two dice. All players receive resources from the tiles whose value is rolled and on which they have settlements or cities.

  2. Trade Phase:

  3. Trade with Players: You can exchange resources with other players.
  4. Trade with the Bank: Exchange 4 of the same resource cards for 1 of any kind from the bank. Some ports offer better rates.

  5. Building:

  6. Build a Road: Costs 1 brick and 1 wood.
  7. Build a Settlement: Costs 1 wood, 1 brick, 1 wool, and 1 grain.
  8. Upgrade to a City: Costs 3 ore and 2 grain (changes a settlement into a city).
  9. Buy Development Card: Costs 1 wool, 1 grain, and 1 ore; provides special abilities or victory points.

  10. Move the Knight: If you play the "Knight" development card, you may move the robber to a new location and steal a card from one of the players there.

Special Features:

  • The Robber: Rolling a 7 activates the robber, blocking resource production from a tile and allows you to steal a resource from a player there.
  • Longest Road: A player with the longest continuous road of at least 5 segments receives 2 victory points.

Strategic Tips

  • Maintain Resources: Ensure you have a variety of resources, allowing you flexibility in trading and building.
  • Trade Actively: Be ready to trade with others to gain advantages.
  • Card Management: Avoid holding too many cards, especially when there's a risk of rolling a 7, which forces you to discard half your cards if you have more than 7.

End of the Game

The game concludes when a player reaches 10 victory points, and they are declared the winner.
