Objective
HeroQuest is a cooperative adventure game where a group of players takes on the roles of heroes fighting against the forces of evil controlled by a player known as "Zargon" (or "Morcar" in some editions). The objective is to complete various quests or adventures by defeating monsters, finding treasures, and solving puzzles.
Components
- Game Board: Modular board with different rooms and corridors.
- Character Cards: Each card describes a hero with unique abilities.
- Monster Figures: Controlled by Zargon to challenge the heroes.
- Game Tokens: For doors, traps, treasure chests, and furniture.
- Dice: For combat and other random elements.
- Equipment Cards: Weapons, armor, and magical items.
- Spell Cards: For magical heroes like the Wizard or Elf.
Setup
- Select a Quest: Zargon selects a quest from the Quest Book.
- Set up the Board: According to the instructions in the Quest Book.
- Select Heroes: Each player chooses one of the four heroes: Barbarian, Dwarf, Elf, or Wizard.
- Prepare Equipment and Spells: Heroes receive their starting equipment and spells.
Gameplay
Turn Sequence: 1. Movement: Heroes are allowed to move according to their dice rolls on the board. 2. Action: After moving, a hero can perform an action: - Attack: Roll attack dice and compare to the monster's defense. - Search: Search a room for treasure or traps. - Cast a Spell: Wizards or Elf may use one of their spells.
- Monster Turn: After all heroes have moved, Zargon takes their turn, moving and attacking with monsters.
Special Rules
- Lines of Sight: A hero must have line of sight to attack or cast a spell on a monster.
- Traps and Secret Doors: Can only be discovered if a hero specifically searches for them.
- Hero's Death: If a hero's health points drop to zero, they are out of the quest unless revived by a potion or spell.
Winning Conditions
- The quest is completed when the specific objectives are achieved. These might be destroying a specific monster, finding a treasure, or rescuing a captive.
