Objective of the Game

Petits chevaux, also known as "Little Horses" or "Ludo", is a classic board game where the objective is to move all of one's pieces (horses) from the starting position into the home area before any other player manages to do so.

Game Components

  • A board with a circular track
  • Four horse-shaped figures for each player, each in a different color
  • A six-sided die

Setup

  1. Each player selects a color and places the four corresponding horses in their stable, the starting area.
  2. Determine the order of play, proceeding clockwise.

Gameplay

  1. Rolling and Starting:
  2. To move a horse out of the stable onto the start position, a player must roll a six.
  3. Upon rolling a six, the player places a piece on the start space and rolls again.

  4. Moving:

  5. Players move a horse forward along the track by the number shown on the die.
  6. A six allows for an additional die roll.

  7. Capturing:

  8. Landing on a space occupied by an opponent's horse sends that horse back to its stable.

  9. Entering Home:

  10. Horses must enter the home spaces after completing the track.
  11. An exact roll is required to move onto the final home area.

Special Features and Strategies

  • Blockades: By having two of their horses on the same space, players can block opponents' progress.
  • Dice Strategy: Since rolling a six is crucial for progress, players often aim to bring as many pieces into play as possible.
  • Risk vs. Safety: Decision making on whether to advance aggressively or secure horses in the home area.

End of the Game

The game ends when a player successfully moves all their horses into the home area. This player is declared the winner.
