Die Siedler von Kanaan: Game Instructions

Objective of the Game

The goal in Die Siedler von Kanaan is to collect points by building roads, cities, and settlements. The first player to reach a specified number of victory points wins the game.

Game Setup

  1. Set up the Game Board: The game board consists of hexagonal tiles that are shuffled and placed randomly in the center of the table. Each tile represents a different resource.

  2. Prepare Resource Cards: Shuffle the resource cards and place them in stacks. There are five types of resources: wood, clay, wool, grain, and ore.

  3. Distribute Building Pieces: Each player receives building cost cards, roads, settlements, and cities in their chosen color.

  4. Determine Starting Position: Each player rolls a dice to determine the starting order. In this determined order, players take turns placing two settlements and one road on the board.

Gameplay

The game proceeds in rounds, each consisting of four phases:

  1. Resource Production: The player whose turn it is rolls two dice. The sum of the roll determines which fields produce resources. Players with settlements adjacent to these fields receive resource cards accordingly.

  2. Trading Phase: Players can trade with each other or with the bank to exchange resources they need.

  3. Building Phase: Players can build roads, settlements, or cities by giving up the corresponding combinations of resources. A road costs 1 wood and 1 clay, a settlement costs 1 wood, 1 clay, 1 wool, and 1 grain, and a city costs 2 grain and 3 ore.

  4. Buy Development Cards: With a specific combination of resources, players can buy development cards, which provide special advantages.

Special Features and Strategy

  • Robber Figure: When a player rolls a 7, the robber is moved. Fields with the robber do not produce resources until it is moved again. The player who rolled the 7 may steal a resource card from another player.

  • Longest Road Award: The first player to create an uninterrupted road consisting of five or more segments receives the longest road card, granting additional victory points.

  • Largest Army Award: Players can gain knight cards through development cards. The player with the largest army receives additional victory points.

  • Strategic Settlement Placement: The right placement of settlements can be decisive. Settlements near frequently rolled numbers or diverse resource fields are advantageous.

Ending the Game

The game ends when a player reaches the required number of victory points - typically 10 points - and finishes their turn.
