Robber Skat - Card Game

Strategy, Family Game

group 3 - 8 Deutsch

Objective of the Game

Robber Skat is a variant of the classic game Skat, with the goal of scoring the most points by winning tricks. A distinctive feature of Robber Skat is the absence of the bidding process, making it more accessible for less experienced players.

Number of Players

The game can be played by 3 to 8 players.

Materials Needed

  • A Skat deck of 32 cards (each suit from 7 to Ace).
  • Paper and pen for keeping track of scores.

Setup

  1. Select a dealer. This person shuffles the cards and deals each player 3 cards (for 3 players) or 2 cards (for more players).
  2. Next, place a face-down pile of two cards in the center of the table. This is called the Talon.

How to Play

  1. The Announcement: The player to the left of the dealer is the first to decide if they want to play. If they opt to play, they must pick up the Talon. If not, the option moves clockwise until someone chooses to play.

  2. The Robber in Play: In Robber Skat, there is generally no bidding process. The player who decides to play is automatically the Robber.

  3. The Talon: The player who picked up the Talon chooses two cards from their hand to discard face down into the Talon. These cards count towards their points at the end.

  4. The Trump Suit: The player who took the Talon declares a trump suit or declares a Null game (no trump, aiming to win no tricks).

  5. The Game: All players now play their cards in turn, starting with the player to the left of the dealer. Each tries to make tricks by laying the highest card in the suit that is led or by playing a higher trump.

  6. Aim of Each Trick is to collect cards with the highest point values, e.g.,

  7. Face cards (Jacks and Queens) and Aces are particularly valuable.

  8. End of the Game and Scoring: Once all cards are played, each player tallies the points from their tricks. The playing lead needs more than half of the points (61 out of 120 possible) to win. In a Null game, no tricks should be taken.

Strategic Tips

  • Evaluate your hand: It's important to make a wise pick from the Talon.
  • Control the pace: Aim to dominate the trick order, especially if controlling the trumps.
  • Surprise with Null: If you have a poor hand, declaring a Null can catch opponents off guard.

Game Variations

There are variants of Robber Skat wherein certain rules, like the exchange of the Talon or the announcing of a counter, are adjusted to make the game more interesting.
