Objective
The objective of Starfarers of Catan is to be the first to achieve a designated number of victory points by expanding your own interstellar empire. This includes establishing colonies, building trade stations, and completing certain missions.
Setup
- Game Board Setup: Assemble the board using hexagonal tiles representing different planet and space regions. Each game can offer different arrangements and starting positions.
- Player Setup: Each player receives a mothership with attachments that indicate their resource production, combat strength, and movement range. Initial colonies and resources are distributed.
- Initial Resources: Each player starts with a set of resources that they can use to kickstart their economy and build additional settlements or ships.
Game Flow
- Turn Phase: Each player can move their ships, establish colonies and trade outposts, and use cards during their turn.
- Dice Phase: The active player rolls a standard roll with two dice to determine which planets produce. Additionally, roll a space die which triggers special events or movements.
- Movement: Plan your ship movements between planet tiles, considering the range of your mothership and the presence of space pirates.
- Trade and Build: Players can trade resources and perform building actions, including establishing trade stations, ships, or upgrading their mothership. Trade can occur with almost any player or the bank.
Special Features
- Space Pirates: These NPCs can block ships or trigger battles that slow down a player's progress.
- Missions: Besides colonization and trading, missions offer additional victory points or special advantages.
- Combat: Engaging space pirates or other challenges involves using dice results and the equipment level of the mothership.
- Technology Upgrades: You can upgrade your mothership by completing trade missions or expanding colonies to enhance technology.
End of the Game
The game ends as soon as a player reaches the required victory points. The exact number can vary depending on the number of players and house rules.
