Objective

Carcassonne – The City is a tile-placement game where players aim to score the most points by strategically placing tiles and occupying parts of the city. The goal is to have the most points at the end of the game.

Components

  • 80 landscape tiles
  • 1 fabric bag
  • 36 wooden followers in four colors (Red, Yellow, Blue, Green)
  • 12 towers
  • 1 scoring booklet
  • 1 scoring pad
  • 100 wooden wall pieces
  • 28 sentinel tiles

Setup

  1. Distribute the wooden followers to the players. Each color belongs to one player.
  2. Shuffle the landscape tiles and put them face down in the fabric bag.
  3. Each player draws 3 landscape tiles as their starting hand.
  4. Start the game with any tile placed in the center of the table.

Game Play

The game proceeds through several rounds until all landscape tiles have been placed or specific game conditions are met. Each round consists of the following steps:

1. Place a Tile

The active player draws a tile from the stack or bag when the city tower unfolds and places it adjacent to an already placed tile on the table. The following connection rules must be observed:

  • Roads must connect to other roads.
  • Fields must connect to other fields.
  • City walls can be interrupted and do not necessarily need to connect to other walls.

2. Deploy a Follower

After placing a tile, the player can deploy one of their followers onto:

  • a road as a robber,
  • a field as a farmer,
  • a city district as a knight.

3. Scoring and Wall Building (optional)

  • Scoring occurs when a structure (road, city) is completed. Farmers on fields are only scored at the end of the game.
  • Wall Building is optional and can be carried out by placing a wall section around the city, enabled by completed scorings.

Final Scoring

The game ends when either all landscape tiles have been drawn or the city wall is fully complete. At the end of the game, all incomplete projects are scored:

  • Incomplete roads give points for each separate tile.
  • Incomplete cities score half a point per tile.
  • Fields are scored for each fully walled city district directly adjacent to the field.

Additionally, the player who completes the city beyond a certain point can earn extra special points through sentinel tiles.

Winner

The player with the highest score after the final scoring wins the game.
