Objective of the Game
In Altiplano, a resource management and construction game, players aim to gather as many victory points as possible by efficiently managing resources. This involves constructing buildings, fulfilling contracts, and collecting goods.
Components
- Game board with various locations
- Resource tokens of different kinds (e.g., fish, alpaca, silver, corn)
- Transport cards
- Contract cards
- Round tracker
- Private storage areas for players
- Bags for players to draw tokens
Setup
- Place the game board in the middle of the table.
- Each player receives a private storage area and a bag.
- Distribute the resource tokens accordingly.
- Shuffle the transport cards and contract cards and place them in decks.
- Each player begins with a similar starting setup of certain resources in their bag.
- Determine the starting player.
Gameplay
The game is played over several rounds, each encompassing the following phases:
1. Planning Phase
- Each player secretly draws a set number of resource tokens from their bag.
- They then set these tokens onto their storage area in preparation for the next action phase.
2. Action Phase
- Players take turns performing actions until all pass.
- Actions include:
- Exchange resources: Swap raw materials for other resources or products.
- Construct buildings: Allocate resources to build structures that provide benefits.
- Fishing: Gain additional fish tokens.
- Trade: Use transport cards to move and sell resources.
3. Maintenance Phase
- Any unused tokens remain in the player's display.
- Players may reveal new contract cards or return resources to the bag.
- The starting player marker rotates to the next player.
Winning the Game
The game concludes when a specific building is constructed or when certain resources run out. The player with the most victory points, accrued through completed contracts, constructed buildings, and collected resources, wins the game.
Strategy Tips
- Focus on gathering resources that synergize with your buildings or contracts.
- Consider the limited space in your bag and optimize your resource planning accordingly.
- Expanding the production technology in specific sectors can yield long-term benefits, so evaluate improvement paths early.
Special Considerations
- The variety of options and paths to victory allows for different strategies, whether aggressive resource management or contract-focused play.
- Building an efficient resource cycle through smart planning can be crucial to gaining long-term advantages.
